Stephen Kent Harpold

Stephen Kent Harpold died on August 5, 2014 with his loving wife of 40 years by his side. He is survived by his wife Joan, his brother David L. Harpold, and a large extended family.   Steve was born December 5, 1944 to Mary Kay and Donald D. Harpold in Kokomo, Indiana. Later the family relocated to North Muskegon, Michigan.  Steve was an excellent athlete and although he attended four years of high school in three different states, he earned twelve varsity letters. He attended college at Butler University/Indianapolis on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Steve completed his first year at Indiana University School of Law before enlisting in the Army. Following Basic and Advanced Infantry training he was accepted to Artillery Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.   Upon completion of that training, he was commissioned as an officer May 12, 1969. Steve received further training at the Jungle Warfare School in Panama and later received orders to Viet Nam where he was assigned as artillery forward observer with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. Steve served with that unit until he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart Medal. Following several months of treatment, he returned to active duty at Fort Sill. He was released from active duty as 1st Lieutenant and returned to Law School where he graduated in January 1973.

After graduating, Steve packed his car and drove to Washington state where he passed the bar exam and began the practice of law. In a couple of years, he and two friends founded their own firm which became a successful trial firm in South King County.  Over the years Steve represented a variety of clients in a wide range of cases, some more significant than others. It made no difference to Steve. His clients were equally entitled to legal representation. Almost no one knew of his contributions. Steve had legitimate bragging rights but never mentioned his triumphs.  In the 1980's and beyond, he focused his practice on representing people who had been injured in accidents of all types. There were many cases of note that he won on behalf of his clients, but due to his low-key approach to his own accomplishments, he stayed out of the limelight, didn't brag to his contemporaries, and went about tending to the needs of his clients.   In 2012, he proclaimed "the practice of law has lost its entertainment value" and retired with his wife, Joan, to their home on Vashon Island. Steve left practice as he came in, low-key, honest, pleasant, ethical and in the final analysis, "a truly likeable lawyer". Steve will certainly be missed by his family, friends, colleagues, clients, partners, and the Law.  Ship Ahoy, Steve, Godspeed to our Just and Peaceful Warrior.   In lieu of flowers, Steve's favored charities are the Paralyzed Veterans of America www.SupportVeterans.org, Disabled American Veterans www.dav.org, www.washingtonjustice.org, and local Food Banks.   A service will be scheduled in September at the Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA.
